Loading
The R/V Urraca is normally docked at STRI's Naos Marine Laboratory pier, on the Pacific coast adjacent to Panama City. For back-to-back cruises in two oceans, a Canal transit may be necessary; if so, loading/unloading will be done at the appropriate terminus of the Canal.
The R/V Urraca is certified to carry a maximum of 10 long tons of cargo, only three of which may be carried on the main deck. It is vital that the volumes and weights of all pieces of cargo and equipment (other than personal effects) be approximated and that that information is included in the Cruise Plan.
All cargo/equipment must be packaged in properly reinforced square-cornered, flat-bottomed crates or other containers that can be easily and securely stowed.
The loading of cargo/equipment and its transportation to and from the loading site are the responsibility of the Scientific Party. The Urraca crew will be available for crane operation and assistance in loading, if such assistance is requested in the Cruise Plan.
