Research In Panama: Permits for research, collecting and specimen-export

Research cruises in Panamanian waters usually require no additional permits beyond the blanket annual permit that is regularly issued by the Panamanian Government to STRI for marine research and collecting throughout the country.

However, the following require additional special permits, which must be requested well in advance:

  1. Any research/collecting in national parks and other restricted areas
  2. Any export of specimens and samples
  3. Any collection of CITES organisms

The Naos Marine Laboratory manager (Mercedes Arosemena) can advise you about what permits you will need and arrange to obtain them for you. Send the request here.

Permits for research/collecting in national parks and restricted areas must be presented by the Chief Scientist to the Vessel Superintendent before the vessel leaves port for the relevant cruise.
